Welcome to BirdBrain Enterprises.  My goal is to provide safe, fun and affordable toys and accessories to the medium to large breed bird and their owners. 

I began making toys and jungle gyms for my own yellow nape parrot (Nikki) and soon friends with large birds started asking if I would make toys for them.  Through trial and error I discovered what toys were best appreciated.  Anyone who owns a large bird, especially an Amazon, knows that packaged with that wonderfully intelligent and curious creature is an equally dynamic attitude.  It took quite a while for Nikki to train his people. 

If you're thinking of purchasing a bird in the near future, here are some tips:

Be sure that the prospective addition to your family is healthy, and sexed.  With the exception of the Eclectus, most large breed parrots can not be identified visually.  There are many old wives tales out there regarding determining how to tell the sex of the parrot, for example, female birds only bonding with men, the female bird will have a flatter head, the male will have a flatter head, the male will be more colorful, etc., but don't be fooled.  The only true ways to determine sex is by DNA or surgical sexing.  With DNA sexing, a small portion is taken from a clipped toenail and sent to a lab. The lab will determine the sex and issue a 'sex certificate' in the birds name.  Ask for the certificate when looking  into purchasing the bird.

	Look to be sure that the nasal passages and eyes are clear and free of discharge.
	Is the bird friendly?  Hand fed babies are friendlier and much more adaptable.
	Consider the commitment before you make the purchase!  Large breed birds are very time consuming and have very long lives.  They may not be appropriate in homes with small children.  They demand a lot of attention and may become jealous of the attention given to small children and attempt retaliation.

Since those days our family has grown.  We also have adopted Marley (another yellow nape), and Missy, our Blue & Gold Macaw.  Going through the training process has been long and I'm lucky that my feathered children have a lot of patience with me.
